As the capital of Wales, Cardiff has in recent years undergone significant redevelopment and rejuvenation, with many cultural and civic building schemes completed for the purpose of highlighting the importance of the city as a centre for Welsh nationalism. Cardiff has experienced an increase in tourists as a direct result, and is presently enjoying something of a cultural renaissance: the National Assembly, City Hall, Cardiff Castle, Millennium Stadium, Cardiff Bay and National Museum & Gallery of Wales have all become must-see destinations. Other popular tourist sights include the Dr Who Exhibition (the popular BBC television show is filmed in Cardiff), Castle Coch, and the Wales Millennium Centre. Further afield are Llandaff Cathedral, Tintern Abbey, the Brecon Beacons, the Vale of Glamorgan and the book-festival town of Hay-on-Wye.
Cardiff is serviced by Cardiff International Airport (Maes Awyr Rhyngwladol Caerdydd), which is the largest in Wales. Although not large by British standards, the airport still sees over two million passengers each year and is visited by airlines such as FlyBe, Thomson Fly, Highland Airways, the Isle of Scilly Airbus, and BMI Baby, for which the airport is a major hub. A new airline, FlyForBeans, is expected to begin offering flights out of the airport in the very near future. Car hire companies at the airport include Hertz, National Alamo, Avis and Europcar, though it is important to note that the Avis desk is closed on Sundays. To get to Cardiff from the airport (which is located several kilometres to the south-west near the town of Barry), simply follow Port Road north-east to the A48 (Cowbridge Road West).
